Tompkins County Small Business Funding from Business Loan Connection

Tompkins County is internationally recognized as being an education and tech center, but it’s so much more than that. Situated in the Finger Lakes Region, in the heart of New York State, it’s home to around 105,000 people and sees around one-million visitors every year. Tompkins County has a lot to offer, whether an individual has come to learn, play, or stay. This is why more than 2,300 businesses have set up establishments here, and why an additional 7,100 individuals are operating thriving non-employee businesses on their own. Business Loan Connection and its credit union partners are glad to support these efforts, as we understand that helping small businesses succeed impacts the community overall.

Ithaca

When most people think of the region, they think of Ithaca. It’s the only city in the county, and serves as its seat. Around 20,000 people live in the city year-round, but major colleges add to the population for a good portion of the year. The esteemed Ivy League school, Cornell University, sits within the city proper. More than 20,000 students pursue their degrees there, from over 120 different countries. In the town of Ithaca, the namesake private college draws in nearly 7,000 more students. Drawing upon the highly-educated student base for employees, many global companies have also made Ithaca home, especially in the technical industry. Life in a college town has much to offer, from cultural activities like theater and museums, to nightlife, and boutique shopping. However, it’s also an incredibly beautiful place to explore as well. There are dozens of trails, ideal for hiking and biking, and 19 waterfalls in the Ithaca area alone. With Cayuga Lake dipping into the county and stopping right at Ithaca, there is ample opportunity for water sports, too.

Outlying Areas

Even though Ithaca tends to be a main draw, there are 15 other towns and villages to explore throughout Tompkins County. The town of Dryden hosts Tompkins Cortland Community College, with more than 3,000 students. Lansing is a booming community, too, with over 11,000 residents on its own. Naturally, there are also any farms in the outlying areas, as well as vineyards and wineries. Many small businesses have chosen to capitalize on this, by establishing services, like bed and breakfasts and restaurants, to cater to the tourists who want to experience New York at its finest.
