Business Loan Connection Serves Chemung County
Chemung County is the quintessential American community. It’s often referred to as “Mark Twain County,” because the author was inspired to pen several novels while spending more than 20 summers in Elmira. Considered part of the Finger Lakes region, Chemung County rests just south of Seneca Lake, at the New York/ Pennsylvania line. It’s one of the few areas that provides access to stunning natural wonders, as well numerous historical sites. The local people are also hard-working, as more than 1,800 local businesses support the community with products, services, and jobs. An additional 3,800 residents operate non-employer or sole-proprietorship organizations, truly living the American Dream. At Business Loan Connection, our credit union partners serve these small businesses with loans and lines of credit, because they understand that a thriving business community helps all the residents of the region. Unlike banks, credit unions are not for profit, and were created with the sole intent of serving their members.
Below is a list of some of the main cities wihtin Chemung County that we serve.
The county seat of Elmira is Chemung County’s only city. The city, itself, has around 29,200 residents, while the town with the same name is home to nearly 7,000. The village of Elmira Heights, which is partly in Elmira and partly in Horseheads, has a population of around 4,000. A Civil War prisoner camp once occupied a large are of the land, though it was destroyed and converted to farmland shortly after falling into disuse. The city was also utilized heavily as part of the underground railroad, due to its location and rail lines. Fittingly, Ernie Davis spent much of his childhood in Elmira, and later went on to be the first African-American winner of the Heisman Trophy. Manufacturing is a large part of the economy, though the area has been home to several notable creatives as well, including Mark Twain, children’s author Tedd Arnold, and fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger. Downtown Elmira is currently being revitalized, as buildings are remodeled with care to preserve historic architecture, and new shops moving in.
The town of Horseheads borders Elmira at the north, and was the first area in the county to be populated. It has now grown to host more than 19,000 people, with around 6,000 of them residing in Horseheads Village. It’s a quaint area, and has been named one of the most-secure places to live in all of America. The local schools have a good reputation, and nearly 60 percent of the residents go on to hold white-collar jobs. While life in Horseheads is very quiet, the hustle and bustle of the big city is not far away.
The town of Southport is also incredibly quiet, and it also routinely makes the list of most-secure places in America. It sits in the southwest corner of the county, and is home to around 11,000 people. The largest draws to Southport are in line with the rest of the greater Elmira area- gorgeous rolling hills and outdoor activities abound. Residents also enjoy one of the lowest costs of living in the country, though the remoteness of the area causes some lengthier commute times.
Big Flats, a town of some 7,500 people on the western side of the county, provides the best of both worlds. It’s one of the few places in the area that is experiencing a population boom, with nearly a 17 percent increase noted since the last census. Big Flats offers a bit more activity and commerce than other parts of the metro area, though residents receive all the same benefits of living in the Finger Lakes region.
